Upcoming Piano Album: “Melodies in January – Miniature Pieces XI”
In this particular album, my goal was to explore new scales. My initial efforts began with googling “Encyclopaedia of Scales”, it was then I realised how many different scales there are that one could potentially write in – 2048 scales in total! This number was pulled from The Universal Encyclopaedia of Scales by MDecks. With the book in hand, I began writing out prompts the were inspired by ancient cultures. Our January Album is inspired by the ancient world and cultures. Each track of this album is inspired from scales from all around the world and each piece is a journey to the ancient past. Each piece had it’s challenges because of the limitation presented by the scales. A couple of the limitations were the amount of notes in the scale and another limitation was the combination of notes with in a scale. E.g. the C Chinese Scale is made up of the notes C, E, F#, G, B. This limitation meant that the melodies really needed to be thought out rhythmically and the use of registration was very important to keep the piece interesting. An example of scale with odd combinations is the C Neapolitan Major. This scale is made up of the notes C, Db, Eb, F, G, A, B. You can imagine the types of unorthodox chords we would be combining.
This unique approach provides a range of original compositions that can provide relaxation and nostalgia. Each piece was created on each day in January.
