About “Turmoil Within”
Within each of us lies a complex mix of emotions that can create inner turmoil. It’s like a stormy sea of conflicting thoughts and feelings, causing internal discord. This turmoil can come from various sources, like unresolved conflicts or balancing personal expectations with outside pressures. It reminds us that being human is complicated, and our emotions don’t always make sense.
To deal with this inner turmoil, we need to reflect on ourselves and become more aware of our feelings. It means accepting that we have a range of emotions and that it’s okay to feel them. By facing our fears and insecurities, we can find ways to grow and move forward. Just like storms eventually pass, working through our inner struggles can lead to better understanding and resilience.
The Music
Turmoil Within is an introspective solo piano piece that delves within and sets to music the conflicts one can feel within themselves.
From the very first chord, a haunting atmosphere is evoked from the F#minor add9 chord. The G# (add9 note) creates a constant dissonance with the root (F#). It is this conflict and ebb and flow of the accompaniment that depicts the conflicts one can experience within themselves. The use of the D major chord helps relieve the tension that arises from the initial chord.
Despite the dissonance the piece offers moments of respite and introspection. These delicate and introspective sections provide a temporary release from the emotional intensity through a walk down from the B minor to the E major chord, which helps bring a lightness and a sense of hope to the neoclassical music piece.
