About “In Quietness”
The inception of In Quietness was born through the first arpeggio you hear in bar 1. This rhythmic and melodic motif was then the basis for the improvisation that followed to create the piece.
This particular piece went through a transition of different keys, beginning in A major and ending in F sharp major. The challenge being, to move through the keys seamlessly and inconspicuously whilst remaining fresh and original and not leaning towards the usual 4-chord songs one would hear in a pop song.
The key to moving smoothly between keys was relying ii-V relationship between chords. You’ll notice that in bar 4 we deviate out of A major with an E minor chord which quickly resolves into B major which is the fifth away and also in bar 10, we move in to A minor which then resolves to E minor which is also a fifth away. Even though this piece had a steady harmonic rhythm, it still manages to give a sense of familiarity.
