Upcoming Piano Album: “Melodies in March – Miniature Pieces XII”
In this particular album, my goal was to complete a writing challenge with other fellow composers. Each composer was given a daily word prompt (which make up the titles of the album) and were challenged to write a piece that captured the sense of the word. Part of the challenge was not only to write to that prompt, but to do so daily.
I found this challenge to be very fun and exciting. I had some apprehensions when beginning this challenge as I hadn’t composed since the middle of 2024. After the first couple of days of writing, I realised my fears were nothing but cautiousness. My music muscles began to work and I was able to find my groove again.
There were a number of songs that I enjoyed writing. They were: “The Smell of Coffee”, ” Underwater Caverns” and “Jumping puddles”, just to name a few.
“The Smell of Coffee” used the minor pentatonic add9 scale. It created this unresolved yet, resolved feeling. The left hand came to me completely by accident but I found it to be the perfect setting for the melody to float gently above.
“Jumping Puddles” was built on the C Mixolydian scale. It’s quite an energetic piece that uses a mixture of staccato and legato articulations. I chose the mixolydian scale because it gave it a sense of movement, which is what I think the prompt needed. Overall, the piece came together quite nicely and it reminded me of certain pieces from the Final Fantasy series.
Miniature Pieces in March is definitely an album that I’m proud to present after some months without writing. It presents pieces for many different moods and contexts. Enjoy the new release of this album.
