About “Winter of the Soul”
Winter of the Soul is a steady and melancholic piece that is set in a minor key. The constant drone of the accompaniment and lingering hum of the melody brings about the feeling of nostalgia and pain that can be felt when winter, as it were, settles in our souls. It’s a piece that is designed to really heighten the feeling of tragedy and loss or the feeling of loneliness. The piece was inspired by Chopin’s Nocturne in B Minor, Op. post., Lento con gran espressione.
This sad New Age piece begins with a small introduction before launching into the quarter-note accompaniment. The left-hand sets the scene for the right-hand to sit gently above. The piece continues in this vein until about the half-way mark. At this point, there is more movement and emotional turmoil set by the left-hand with the flowing eighth notes, in arpeggiated form.
