About “Goodbye”
A single picture can ignite a spark of creativity, inspiring the birth of a beautiful song. When we encounter these types of inspirations that captivates our imagination, it becomes a canvas upon which artists are inspired to react and create. The colours, textures and emotions within the picture weave a story waiting to be told through art and music. As artists, we look for these moments of inspiration: a word spoken, an image, a movie, a feeling, etc. Anything to get the fires of our creativity churning is invaluable and something we seek for.
Goodbye is a piano piece that was born from this very interaction. I came across an image online that depicted a train station. It was clear to me from the image that it had been raining because there were small, still puddles. There was steam being flushed from under the train and nobody to be seen. I remember looking at that image and feeling the emotion of sadness from departure. My mind played movies that showed people running alongside trains, waving goodbye to their loved ones. It was from the image and this feeling that I felt inspired to compose Goodbye.
The Music
I was inspired to write a simple song, focusing primarily on the melody. As you listen to this song, you’ll note that the left-hand is not at all difficult. The right-hand has the melody and it is simple both rhythmically and melodically. The melody only contains quarter notes and eighth notes. I wanted to make a melody that was hummable so that it could inspire people to sing along, or remain in their minds after the song was done.
Being inspired by a picture to write a song is a testament to the power of art and its ability to transcend boundaries. It reminds us that creativity knows no limits, and that a single image has the potential to spark a melody that resonates deeply within us and touches the souls of others.
