About “To Fall in Love”
To Fall in love is a song about the idea of falling in love. I wrote this song inspired by Erik Satie’s Gymnopédie No.1. It captures Satie’s enchanting simplicity while adding personal musical ideas in the melody.
Written in 4/4 time but with the feel of 3/4, the piece has a delicate and graceful rhythm that creates a waltz-like feel. The left-hand accompaniment mirrors Satie’s style, providing a gentle foundation and lilting effect. This waltz like feel is achieved through the held note on the 2nd and 3rd beats of the left hand. As such, giving the feeling that it’s in 3/4.
With the steady bass set, the simple melody is written above in 6ths. It has a simple two-eighth note motif followed by a longer held note. Making it distinct and predictable. The melody is simple but singable.
The spaces between bars was intentional to allow the melody to breath and give time for reflection and thought. My goal for this piece was to ensure that there was space between each musical phrase.
