About “Pensive Melancholy”
Pensive Melancholy is a piece about brooding thoughts that can circulate in our minds. This piece was inspired by the arpeggiated chord in the first bar and its constant repetition downwards.
The piece is written in 6/8 and the motif is a simple dotted 8th note followed by a 16th note then an 8th note. The rhythmic motif does not change throughout the piece and maintains this constant persistency downwards. The left hand also maintains its syncopated rhythm to create movement and to depict the idea that thoughts are constant and sometimes overwhelming.
Harmonically, the piece is written in C minor. But by bar 3, we move to the G minor chord but the melody has moved into C dorian, giving it this otherworldly sound. The piece utilises other diatonic chords found in C minor such as Ab major and F minor.
